What is the Trager® Approach?

The Trager Approach is a holistic form of bodywork that helps bring freedom, fluidity, and ease to the body, leading to better alignment and healthier movement patterns.  It promotes sensory awareness and teaches self-care.  The effects are cumulative and help build your conscious awareness of your body and how to find comfort.

Trager helps loosen muscles, bring elasticity back into the fascia and engage joint mobility.  It downregulates the nervous system to allow the body to shift from fight or flight mode into rest and digest mode to let the body begin healing itself.  It allows us to relax, soften and take a pause, a breath, a step away from our daily stress. 

It is like a full system reset.

What to expect in a Trager session

We’ll start the session with a body check-in and some Mentastics. Mentastics are simple and gentle self-care movements.  When we move to the table, you can be fully clothed or undressed and draped with sheets and blankets. 

The tablework includes rocking, gentle bouncing, elongations and play with joint movement, all within the range of comfort.  Curiosity is a vital element.  Your body and unconscious mind will experience the freedom of being moved with no effort on your part, thereby remembering possibilities. 

After rising from the table most people are keenly aware of a more open chest, a sense of integration and their vertebrae being stacked up so standing tall is effortless.  They are more relaxed while also feeling the flow of energy in their body.

About Ilana Bloom

I am at my most joyful when I am in the flow of movement. I was a gymnast from childhood into college, where I found modern dance and Contact Improvisation, and later, in my mid twenties, I learned trapeze.  I continue to be active in Contact Improv and aerial dance.  I was drawn to work with the body and became a massage therapist in 2001.  While I was working as a massage therapist, I was introduced to the Trager Approach by a colleague and I was hooked.  I received a Trager session after a day of work and when I got into my car to head home, I had to move my rear view mirror UP because I was sitting taller and more aligned in my body!  I studied Trager with pauses to have two amazing children.  I became a certified practitioner in 2010.  I love the fluidity, the softness and the improvisational nature of Trager.
